Live Review: LISTEN: Heavy Blanket (J Mascis) 'Dr. Marten's Blues'

14 May 2012 | 10:30 am | Staff Writer

J Mascis rules and as your editor, I ban you from saying otherwise. Why? Because if you dislike Heavy Blanket, we can't be friends.

J Mascis' latest side project HEAVY BLANKET have just released their debut self-titled album on Outer Battery Records – the album can be streamed in full HERE. As usual, J Mascis has not failed to impress, but for those that aren’t particularly keen on guitar solos you may be slightly disappointed.

The album features six tracks- all of which are instrumental. The drums pound away, the basslines hum along and J Mascis melts our faces with his distorted and insanely frantic guitar solos. There will certainly be mixed feelings regarding this album; some may find it repetitive and lacking melody whilst others who are more appreciative of frantic fretwork will be  awe-struck for months.

'Dr. Marten's Blues' was our first taste of the album and also a pretty good indicator of what one will find inside. The song starts off with a filthy baseline and is accompanied by an absolutely thundering drum kit before the guitar steps in and steals the show. There is no denying that J Mascis is a good guitar player and this album only reinforces that fact.
