INTERVIEW: Elizabeth Rose

21 May 2012 | 1:30 pm | Staff Writer

Elizabeth Rose talks about her inspiration, growing up as a tomboy, her love of fashion, and what it feels like to be remixed.

Only recently hitting our airwaves with her first single ‘Ready’; producer, singer and songwriter ELIZABETH ROSE has already made a run of the summer festival circuit, remixed tracks for Flight Facilities and Jinja Safari and is even fending off odd requests from strange men wanting to cover and remix her songs on Soundcloud.

When we last caught up with Sydney’s newest edition to the Aussie electronic scene, the lovely ELIZABETH ROSE, she had more than a little on her plate (Check out our previous interview HERE)

Needless to say, she’s had a busy year, and with her first headline tour kicking off at the end of this month, this is only the beginning. Let’s hope it’s the end for Soundcloud stalkers, though...

The first few months of the year saw Elizabeth embarking on her first ever tour supporting Snakadaktal. Immune to on-stage nerves when it comes to big crowds (small audiences are a different story), she was able to give a taste of what’s to come for her upcoming EP (due mid July) to the swarm that was Snakadaktal’s mostly sold-out shows.

“It was very lucky that I did that, because now I actually have people on each state who have heard of me!” she laughs. “Melbourne was my favourite gig. There was this guy dancing crazily at the front of the crowd, it was weird, everyone else was just bopping but he was just throwing himself around. It was so fun, I’d never toured before so it was all very new to me.”

Aside from working on tracks for her own EP, Elizabeth has been remixing tracks for Chairlift, Frames, as well as another track for Flight Facilities, which we can expect later in the year. Though, it’s not only strangers who request to remix her tracks, with Nina Las Vegas, Gold Fields and White Fang all contributing to the EP.

“It does feel strange,” she admits of having others remix her own tracks. “It’s because I’m so close to the singles and I’ve been working on them for so long. But they’re all great and I was really pleased with them all. Yeah, one weirdo did send me something on Soundcloud privately, it was so funny! He sang over the intro to ‘Show Me The Stars’, but I didn’t reply because I thought it was creepy (laughs). It was so bad I thought it was a joke, I thought he was mocking me! A lot of people have been privately messaging me and asking me if they can remix tracks, but I don’t really want to do that yet, I want to keep it to people I know.”

A creature of on-stage theatrics herself, Elizabeth says we can expect some serious costumes and stage designs for her solo shows.

“I’m going to be spending some time working on outfits for each show, and I really want to dress the stage up as well,” she says. “I have a friend who designs and makes them for me, she made my little Parklife onesie. I love it! I studied fashion after high school, it was going to be my other career choice if the music thing didn’t work out so well (laughs). I love the dressing up part of it, it brings another element to the show. I’ve always loved to dress up from a young age. It’s just part of who I am.”

Along with her list of collaborations, the Sydney songstress has already been receiving some serious recognition. She was recently listed as one of Radar Music’s 20 Aussie electronic artists to look out for in 2012 – proudly noting that she is in fact the only female on the list, and thanking her tomboy side along with the influence of her producer brother for her penchant for electronic music. Holding the candle for a rise in female producers, her case was furthered by landing a spot on the new Modern Songbirds compilation album alongside the likes of Bjork and Lana Del Ray.

“It’s so cool! I’m so bewildered about that,” she laughs. “I can’t believe I’m on this CD with the artists I look up to, it’s crazy. There’s not a lot of female producers out there, but I think it’s slowly changing as girls are starting to realise that it’s not uncool to do that. I was always a bit of a tomboy when I was younger though, I always wanted to do what the boys were doing. I got into it watching my older brother at home, he’s quite a successful DJ and producer so I guess he’s been a role model in some way. I used to hear his music from across the hall and go in and dance. I actually used to sing on a lot of his tracks when I was 11 or 12, I sound like a pipsqueak!”

If 2012 so far is any kind of indication, the rest of the year is only looking up for Elizabeth Rose. Ladies, it’s time to step up. Guys, look out!
