Live Review: LISTEN: The Flaming Lips and Bon Iver 'Ashes in the Air'

5 April 2012 | 5:00 pm | Hannah Story

The Flaming Lips and Bon Iver are giving you exactly what you were waiting for- something very very odd. But cool in a really odd way...

THE FLAMING LIPS and BON IVER collaborated for Record Store Day. Remember? Well behold, ‘Ashes in the Air,’ the first full track to be dropped from the album, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.

Oh god this is weird. This is really really weird. Didn’t you expect this though? Shouldn’t you have known better than to NOT have expected 6 minutes of Bon Iver and Wayne Coyne’s voices combining? With a space-age soundscape behind it? Sorry if this doesn’t remind you of ashes in the air. It doesn’t make me think of that either. What I think of are flying space-robots shooting lasers and flying around in slow-motion, whilst Bon Iver cheers from the sideline and Wayne Coyne wears a cute little spacesuit and plays with a little space-puppy. What drugs were they on? Do I want some? Why do I think that Wayne Coyne would be a dog person?

Many questions are raised. Most are left unanswered. I don't think I mind. It's growing on me. The records look really cool though. And just imagine what the ones coated in Bon Iver’s blood look like - pretty cool, aye, and they might come in handy when you scientists out there start cloning people.

Now, tell us what bizarre scenarios you can imagine being played out with this song as soundtrack, and we might give you kudos. Yup. Do it for the kudos.
