Live Review: FEATURE ARTIST: Aleks and The Ramps

21 March 2012 | 12:00 pm | Staff Writer

With a 3rd EP Facts released earlier this year, these creative Melbournites have well & truly produced quality tunes for fans to indulge in.

After listening to an ALEKS AND THE RAMPS track you can be forgiven if you feel like you have just fallen head first down the rabbit hole into some opium-fuelled Lewis Carroll creation that makes you want to smoke weed with a delightfully sarcastic caterpillar. If you haven’t yet heard of them, and would like to go on a musical journey that challenges the likes of an acid tripping Magical Mystery Tour then here’s the band for you.

Love them or hate them, ALEKS AND THE RAMPS always seem to divide a crowd, with one of the most unique sounds you would have ever heard on the Australian music scene. Formed in 2005 and with a third EP Facts released earlier this year, these creative Melbournites have well and truly produced some quality tunes for fans to indulge in. With track titles like ‘Middle Aged Unicorn on the Beach with Sunset’ who wouldn’t want to take a listen?

Their psychedelic pop tunes don’t follow one set beat, with each song twisting and turning and surprising you at every corner. One second you are captivated by the melancholic lead vocals (the voice of Aleks Bryant) and then, suddenly, you are listening to a sweet and poppy harmony. Next up, you’re bobbing to a catchy guitar hook and then following that you find yourself swooning over a soulful trumpet solo (check it out in their track ‘Crocodile’).

Underway is their National Tour, following the release of their newest EP, and you can be guaranteed that ALEKS AND THE RAMPS will soon be a household name. With live shows that include “choreographed dance moves, ill-fitting basketball uniforms, injuries and equipment breakage due to wild stage behavior” how can they not be?
