Live Review: LISTEN: Polographia 'Sunsets Remixed'

28 February 2012 | 3:00 pm | Staff Writer

Sunsets Remixed takes the original Sunsets into outer space, bliss becomes euphoria and the daydream lasts all night long.

POLOGRAPHIA’s Sunsets is a blissed-out soundtrack to blissing out, a subtropical daydream in digital form. Sunsets Remixed takes this soundtrack into outer space, bliss becomes euphoria and the daydream lasts all night long.

HUGO FREDERICK’s take on ‘Righteous Hit’ reworks its plaintive vocals into peaceful affirmation, “it’s not over” crooned like a mantra as the track ascends giddily upwards. KNXWLEDGE  focuses ‘Sunsets’ down into a beat, a single hypnotic loop that manages to sound different every time it runs through your head.

“I See” turns long and winding at the hands of GARDLAND, building and building and falling and falling around an insistent and unsettling melody. FRAMES almost double the length of ‘Tropic Fruit’, turning in a timeless piano-led disco jam, hands in the air and sun on the horizon. The closing remix ‘With You’ is a relatively contemplative breather, NAKAGIN keeping the vocals and letting them drift over a sparse, chiming backdrop.

On their Bandcamp, Polographia describe their music as, “A happiness tinged with loss. Misery in a major key.” It’s a universal feeling and Sunsets Remixed just shows how many directions you can take it in (if you’re a talented producer). It’s the bittersweet sound of expansive dreams reducing into reality, the summertime leaving just fleeting memories, the perfect accompaniment to your end-of-February bummer.
