The Flaming Lips Versus Bon Iver

30 January 2012 | 3:40 pm | Hannah Story

THE FLAMING LIPS have just added Bon Iver to their ever-expanding list of collaborators.

Who do you think would win in a fight between WAYNE COYNE and BON IVER? Wayne Coyne, easy. But let’s say Justin Vernon actually had a chance - do you reckon he’d be a hair-puller? If so, should silver-fox Coyne shave his facial hair?

Luckily, these considerations don’t actually have to be made. THE FLAMING LIPS have just added Bon Iver to their ever-expanding list of collaborators so no punches need be thrown.

In honour of Record Store Day, our favourite fiery lips are releasing a compilation of collaborative tracks, with artists like Nick Cave, Neon IndianYoko Ono and now Bon Iver.

Record Store Day falls this year on April 21, serving as an opportunity for independent record stores worldwide to come together with artists in a celebration of their life’s work- music. 2012 ambassador, Iggy Pop sums up this music world of ours as an ‘exotic jungle full of life and death and sex and anger…’ Hopefully Coyne’s taken this image into account during the recording of the album.

The Flaming Lips have supported the event for some time now. Last year they released a vinyl collection of their albums spanning the years 1992-2002. In 2010, they released a cover vinyl of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and in 2009 they covered Madonna just for the occasion.

So get excited. A combination of the textured vocals of Bon Iver with The Flaming Lips’ signature aural landscapes guarantees us something amazing we’ve probably never heard before. And best of all? A second compilation is set for release later in the year.

The Flaming Lips tweeted a preview of the Bon Iver piece;
