Live Review: LISTEN: M83 'Midnight City' Remixes

12 January 2012 | 3:30 pm | Staff Writer

Your guide to the vast amount of remixes for M83's breakthrough galactic hit 'Midnight City'. Get along to see the band at Laneway Festival.

Following their amazing 2011 album 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming', France's M83 are determined to go strong into 2012 and have just been announced for 2012's Coachella Festival. With piles and piles of bootleg and official remixes dropping every day for their breakthrough galactic hit 'Midnight City', consider this your official guide to the best of the best.

My favourite to date is actually an unofficial bootleg of the track from Boston born New York DJ DAN ALCALA. It's incredibly punchy and triumphant, building to massive choruses and dipping to mellow yet energetic verses. Incredible work for someone who didn't have the production stems at his disposal.

You remember ERIC PRYDZ right? Yeah of course you do, he was responsible for the reprehensible 2009 bogan anthem 'Call On Me'. If you still don't know what I'm talking about watch the music video HERE. Despite his back catalogue PRYDZ 'Midnight City' remix is quite good; very similar idea here of lifting the song up to a danceable tempo and strengthening the drums.

Now onto the official ones - released as a full EP by the band. Interesting interpretations include TRENTEMOLLER's signature cinematic emotional house contribution and a very strange sax jam from BIG BLACK DELTA, somewhat reminiscent of the Tatooine bar music from Star Wars.

M83 have just added a second Melbourne show at Prince Bandroom to their upcoming run of Australian dates around their appearances on the 2012 St Jeromes Laneway Festival Tour. Since they sold out the venue on the 2nd they decided to announce a gig for the 3rd as well!

All date & ticket info for the tour is available HERE

Have a listen to this brilliant collaboration the band did with ZOLA JESUS on their track 'Intro' HERE.
