Getting Fresh With Deep Sea Arcade

10 August 2011 | 3:07 pm | Staff Writer

The charming boys from DEEP SEA ARCADE took some time out from their hectic schedules to answer a few questions for us ahead of their set at Canberra's FRESH PRINCE launch. Those cute lads will traipse their way down to Transit Bar this Saturday and knock your socks off with their own brand of psychedelic indie-pop.

You’ve just finished up your support slot touring with Modest Mouse, how was that?

It was a blast. Their crowd showed up early and responded really well to us. Isaac from Modest Mouse was a charming host and kept crashing our dressing room to say stuff about penises.

How do you think you will go changing from huge venues to an intimate live music party night? How will your show differ?

What really makes a difference to the performance is how responsive the audience is rather than their size. If they’re ready to get crazy then we’ll light our instruments on fire and climb everything in sight.

Do you guys have any quirky pre-show rituals we should know about? Any unreasonable rider requests or only food that is yellow?

Tim requests 4 litres of full cream milk on the rider and drinks all of it just before we play. He is lactose intolerant and about two songs in his respiratory system goes into panic mode, his hands and face balloon out to three times their size and he begins to thrash about wildly. This is what gives him his frenzied stage performance. By the end of the set he’s a foaming mess on the floor and we give him an adrenalin shot to the breastplate.

How did your tour of the UK and Spain go? Did you find yourselves? Change lives? Wake up with anime tattoo?

It was a great trip. We played a heap of fun shows to lots of new people and I can definitely say our live show really developed over the course of the tour. The highlight was probably playing at Primavera Sound in Barcelona. We hung out for the whole thing and it was the most amazing music festival I’d ever been to. We also did a few really strange and hilarious Spanish TV performances.

More importantly, how did the international crowds take your music?

Thankfully we went over really well I think. One of the standout shows was The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. Our first show was there and we were jetlagged as hell and very pleasantly surprised to find a full room of Brits waiting for us. They were really into it and were yelling things out that didn’t appear to be offensive. We’re looking forward to going back as soon as we can.

You’re heading to the Capital this Saturday for the launch of our new club night Fresh Prince. Were you fans of the show back in the day?

Well personally I only watched the show a few times because I was distracted by The Secret World of Alex Mack.

There are five of you in the band and we have picked the top five characters from the show. Who in the band is most like each character and why?

Will Smith (Fresh Prince) – Carlos because he’s the Fresh Prince of Rockdaddy Mansion.

Carlton Banks (Snobby cousin) – Nick W (me) because I’m writing these answers and if I called anyone else the “snobby cousin” I might get in trouble.

Uncle Phi (Voice Of Reason) – Simon because he is everyone’s uncle.

DJ Jazzy Jeff "Jazz" (That Friend) – Nic M because he is beat creator.

Geoffrey Butler (Cynical Butler) – Tim because he is the cynical butler until he drinks his milk.
