PREMIERE: AKA Lui delivers disco delights on his debut single

There’s a new sheriff in town and his name is AKA LUI. The Byron Bay-based artist has not only given us his debut single, but he’s also announced that he’ll be heading out on tour too. His debut, ‘Hey! I Don’t Want That Anyway’ will be officially out on all of your fave streaming platforms tomorrow, but to tide us over until then, he’s given us a first listen of the track right here.

This one’s mixed and produced by AKA Lui himself, with mastering coming in from legend Greg Calbi who has mastered tracks for the likes of Tame ImpalaMGMT and more.

There’s not one thing to not love about this track. From the opening moment, we’re plunged deep into the disco, that bass guitar taking us for a walk around the dancefloor and Lui‘s voice commanding us around it. Fluid guitars rise and fall with his voice, the crisp drum beat driving the track, but never taking centre stage.

The second verse is where it really ramps up, and we’re given a healthy dose of his vocoded vocals. It’s a bold move pairing such a nostalgic track with an audio effect that right now, is completely present in both pop and hip-hop, but the way he’s injected it into the track gives it a solid future-funk feel.

Of the track, AKA Lui said “‘Hey! I Don’t Want That Anyway’ is the fight against your desires. It’s about being addicted to someone or something, and yet trying to convince yourself that you’re not. It’s the struggle between giving in and embracing your lustfulness, or fighting against it for the betterment of your future self”.

No idea where she’ll be in 10 years, but as long as she has a good record and a glass of white wine, she’ll be sweet.
