Live Review: World Champion shrug the weight of the world off their shoulders in their 'Nevermind' clip

29 April 2019 | 7:37 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Gearing up to release their sophomore EP, Skyline, on May 10 is Sydney three-piece WORLD CHAMPION. This one follows the trio's debut EP, Avocado Galaxy, from way back in 2015 that put effortlessly infectious synth-pop into the fore of all of our minds, and honestly, never really finding its way out.

They've given us a few singles so far in preparation for the EP's release in 'Gun''s colourful groove and the easy, breezy, suspenseful synth-pop of 'Callisto'.

In the true spirit of all good hat tricks, their latest, 'Nevermind', takes their effortlessly groovy synth-pop into slacker-rock territory and raises a third stellar single, with a trippy clip from Aussie legends Struthless in the mix for good measure.

The track takes the best elements of 70's psychedelia and injects them straight into the world of World ChampionWill Campion's soaring, airy falsetto floats effortlessly atop slacked acoustic guitar strums, a steady tambourine and one hell of a walking bass line.

Struthless perfectly encapsulates the essence of the track in the accompanying visual. Delving deep into the inner psyche of the cartoon protagonist, the clip explores that 'Nevermind' feeling of getting outside and away from modern insecurities and finding a way to get back into the world and see it for what it is.

With three stellar singles up their sleeve all capturing different elements of the World Champion sound, we're excited to see how the rest of the record is going to come together.

World Champion's Skyline EP will be out on May 10 via Future Classic.
