PS Selected: Female Wizard, Jubilee, ZEFGIRLCLUB & more

7 April 2019 | 11:06 am | Holly O'Neill

This week we're celebrating selectors that think differently about genre convention, with mixes from TZUSING, SPINEE & more

Welcome back to our weekly segment where we pluck the best mixes from all over the web and the world, bundle ’em together and call it PS Selected. Whether it was whipped up last week or last year, if it’s worth listening to it’s bound to be featured as Holly O’Neill takes you through the hours and hours of quality mixes uploaded across the net by big and small selectors alike.

A good DJ uses genre convention to craft a cohesive set, but a great DJ throws out the rules all together and manages to make it work with a thoughtful approach to blending disparate sounds. Mixes from SPINEE, FEMALE WIZARD, TZUSING, ZEFGIRLCLUB and JUBILEE all approach selecting and mixing in this way, drawing from a multitude of genres and scenes to come to a whole new experience that springs from their curation.

In her latest mix for international producer pal LUCY on Reprezent Radio, ZEFGIRLCLUB choreographs a brooding mix of dark techno and warped club. Hit play for a fourty five minute extension of her production sensibilities, full of selections complete with unsettling vocals, imposing kicks and industrial sound design. The energy stays high enough to keep you moving while the emotive intensity grows to no doubt trigger a club catharsis on the dancefloor.

Last month, PC Music's resident rave darling SPINEE graced the stage of London's mega four day weekender Bangface to deliver a huge set of balls to the wall dance tunes inspired by nightcore, jersey, niche club and gabber. Lucky for us she managed to record her insane hour of blistering neo-rave tunes that perfectly blend a classic rave sound with the boundary pushers and genre blenders of the modern dance underground. Strap in as she cranks up the energy with a mix of cheesy pop flips, busy breaks and huge bass lines.

Ahead of his slot at Dekmantel Festival later this year, producer and DJ Tzusing delivered a teaser for his upcoming genre mash up of a set. Chinese born but globally travelled, his presence in the scenes of Chicago, Singapore and Taiwan has impacted his breadth of selections that draw from dark industrial techno and niche club, to bounding pop and trap sounds. Across the tracks, the mix is coloured with glossy sound design and a metallic edge that makes the disparate selections feel totally streamlined.

Kicking off DJMag's new mix series On Cue is Miami Bass authority Jubilee, who's expansion of the definition of the genre has influenced not only her hometown scene of Miami and home base of New York, but scenes all over the world. Drawing influence from the sounds of the global underground, the hour features her own production among sounds collected on her compilation series Magic City. It's a fun mix full of dirty club sounds and bass lines that will hook your hips into a hypnotic rhythm.

After making a name for herself in the Australia dance scene as Brooke Powers, she's putting away her classic house tunes and leaning into experimental club experiences as Female Wizard. In her debut mix for Skylab Radio under her new alias, she explores the forward thinking fringes of club sounds and crafts a kind of magic in this set. Kicking everything off with some off kilter rhythms and launching into high speed footwork, techno and juke, every new selection is bold and left of centre. Throughout she masterfully blends polyrhythms at high speed, and weaves speedy lowkey selections until jacking up the energy halfway for a grand finale.
