Live Review: Ahead of her national tour, Your Girl Pho gets real on 'Five-Thirty PM'

10 April 2019 | 1:33 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Hot off the back of a stellar couple of months playing the Perth legs of festivals like FOMO and Laneway FestivalYOUR GIRL PHO returns today with a totally relatable new single. It also comes as a warm welcome to the start of her first headline tour of 2019.

'Five-Thirty PM' is a huge pop moment for the Perth artist that also allows for her production skills to wildly do their thing. Maximalism is on show here, with her vocals delivering punchy, soulful verses backed up by a damn catchy chorus.

She recorded the demo for this one in her pyjamas after not changing out of them all day (relatable), in an old dining room, feasting on some Vegemite toast. Lyrics in the chorus distressfully detail 'Adulthood has hurt me I admit/But I'm a failure in disguise... Sometimes I don't get out of bed till 5:30PM'.

Even by the tone of the track alone paired with the vulnerable realness of the lyrics, her relatability is both refreshing and validating. A lot of the anxieties explored in the song that I've experienced felt quite alleviated at the track's end.

Of the track, she said "'Five-Thirty PM' was written during (now a distant memory) a time I experienced my first more intensive depressive episode, where I would struggle to get out of bed most days. I was feeling the most pressure from a new job, and everything else that came with transitioning into Adulthood, and expectations to be “with it”.

Social media was definitely impacting on my mental health too, promoting the idea that everyone is “getting it” and are succeeding in all their plans and goals. Especially as someone with long term aspirations, this meant I felt like things weren’t coming together for me as quickly as I hoped/expected which all contributed to the spiralling down.

The song is a fun take on actually quite a common human experience most adults can relate to."
