Live Review: PREMIERE: Close Counters & Laneous jam out on 'Tip Of My Tongue'

8 March 2019 | 12:45 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Melbourne electronic funk duo CLOSE COUNTERS return today with one hell of a new single, 'Tip Of My Tongue'. Taking you on a sonic journey through off-kilter percussion, warm guitars, some pretty masterful funk and a gorgeous musing of pondering vocals.

They've teamed up with Soul Has No Tempo's Laneous to deliver this one, and the collaboration is a bloody good one.

Through his vocals, Laneous delivers the absolutely crushing narrative of being so debilitatingly aware of your strong feelings for someone, and realising that there's nothing you can do about the way that you're feeling. He said “The song is about when a girl takes over your thoughts. And everything you do reminds you of her in some way. And it’s shit.”

Close Counters take on a fusion of lowkey disco and nu-funk, whilst simultaneously keeping it all within the electronic music realm. The percussive layering adds to the intensity of the track as it progresses, simmering it down while the vocals become the focus and ramping it up as the narrative continues.

The constant alternating between the call and response and harmonies in the vocal aspect of the track make it feel like a conversation between the various production elements. The production is clever in that Close Counters work to recontextualise and dismantle a typical pop song structure to fit within this electronic music context. It's a dance track with pop elements, and not the other way around.

With their first of the year being so damn strong, we're very excited to see what's next for these Melbourne boys.
