Live Review: CLYPSO brings the flavour on 'Strange Behaviour' with Sophiegrophy

7 December 2018 | 7:28 am | Michael Stratford Hutch

Sydney-based producer, songwriter and vocalist CLYPSO has rounded out a huge 2018 with new track ‘Strange Behaviour,’ featuring Melbourne rapper Sophiegrophy.

In her own words, “It’s about some people you meet who have an x-factor that intrigues you. It could seem unusual and strange to some people or they could be awkward and mysterious, but those things give them a unique ‘flavour’…it’s all about embracing the weird and wonderful world we live in.” Delivering this concept through her signature global tropical electronica, or as CLYPSO calls it, “troppo chilli flakes,” ‘Strange Behaviour’ is yet another danceable, excellently produced offering from the artist.

‘Strange Behaviour’ comes out of the gate holding nothing back, with gorgeous harmonies and a sample like an elephant sounding a battle-cry. CLYPSO’s infectious beat, collaged from tongue pops, auxiliary percussion and drum machine samples, is the perfect companion to her signature vocal delivery, with closely layered harmonies. Throw in a pulsing saw-wave bassline, and killer woodwind sample as a post-chorus and it’s clear that CLYPSO’s target isn’t the only one with an x-factor. Sophiegrophy provides a succinct yet effective verse, serving as the song’s breakdown. Her flow compliments CLYPSO’s production well, with panned percussion creating an undeniable feeling of groove and momentum.

In addition to releasing yet another stand out track, CLYPSO has also announced her debut EP Cameo and the news of her being signed to tastemaker label etcetc, who will be releasing the six-track EP come January 11. Having also dropped tracks featuring the likes of Kwame, and been hand-picked to tour with the likes of PNAU and What So Not, it’s hard not to think that CLYPSO has absolutely killed it in 2018. We can’t wait to hear the full EP in January, and we’re so stoked to see what she goes on to achieve in 2019.
