Sydney selector Maia Bilyk lets us in on her favourite festival moments

You've probably heard Sydney selector Maia Bilyk on FBi Radio's For The Record (Wednesday, 12-1pm) or hosting Lunch with Maia (Thursday, 3-6pm). Outside of delivering some hot tunes over Sydney's airwaves, she's also a bona fide selector, playing some choice funk & disco cuts to the masses across town.

She's been putting her head down and jumping onto a bunch of summer festival lineups including Summer Dance and FBi Turns 15. Just last week, she headed to Return To Rio to play at Bacardi El Coco tropical danceteria.

The danceteria is now headed to Spilt Milk, bringing with it Bacardi mojitos, palm trees and some epic performances from local and international talent. For those who missed out on Return to Rio, crowds at Spilt Milk this weekend can expect surprise sundown sets tucked away in this tropical escape.

As Maia's been getting busy this summer festival season, we thought it would be cool to see what some of her favourite festival moments have been. Sus them below!

  1. Secret Garden 2018

This was my first ever DJ set - crazy I know. A good friend of mine chucked me in the deep end before I knew what any of the buttons on a CDJ meant. Popping my DJ cherry is hands down, as terrible as the filters and transitions were, one of the best times evaaaa!

  2. Seeing Kaytranada break it down at FOMO

Way back I went on a Soundcloud stalk and found so many hidden gems including a Hillary Duff cover (go ahead and check it out). It was so satisfying to finally catch Kevin play his tracks live after missing out on his 99.9% tour - not nearly as good as watching his cute AF shoulder rolls and baby crumping to his beats in Parra Park.

  3. My first Splendour in the Grass

I knew nothing about mud, gum boots, camping, camping with friends and did all the wrong things prep wise. Tame Impala played and I FaceTimed my brother the set. Caught some of my favourite bands of all time, got some new ones, and relived some tween ones.

  4. I think the opening bars of 1-5-9 by Koi Child at Laneway 2017 started a jazz kick in me. If not for the vocals, it was the percussion-brass combo that I’m now an absolute sucker for. They killed their set, especially for an early slot and got me hooked on slow grooved bands like Nightmares in Wax.

  5. FBi Turns 15

I know this just happened and I'm sad to admit this was the first time I've seen CC:DISCO! play live. She's an absolute nutter behind the decks. I love love love her new CC:EDITIONS vinyl venture and she just hits things in all the right spots. She's given me the courage (haha) to not be afraid of playing the big songs that people know. She's disco DJ goals and I can't wait to see her play again very soon :)))
