Live Review: Donatachi brings sugar to the club with ‘In Love', featuring Rosebud Leach

Independent Sydney-based producer DONATACHI is back with another taste of his upcoming EP Precious Metal - a sugary twist on love with repeat collaborator, vocalist Rosebud Leach. Having already teamed up with the likes of Lucianblomkamp and Anatole in the past few years, Rosebud glides atop Donatachi’s production, a saccharine club track that even after one listen, sticks in the mind like the flavour of grape Hubba Bubba. ‘In Love’ is another fantastic sample of what’s to come from the EP, with rubber-band subs, snap-crackle-popping hats and snares, and synth blips that bubble along like freshly-opened soda.

‘In Love’ is a clear reinterpretation of the classic love song, refracting that long tradition through a prism of blissful contemporary pop and club sensibilities. As the producer himself puts it, “I’ve always been a sucker for ballads, but with 'In Love', wanted to make one with a fresh perspective. The song originally took inspiration from late 80's Janet Jackson, especially the stunning way she harmonises with her own voice, creating layers and layers of vocal tracks.”

Donatachi has been slowly carving out a distinct space for himself in both the Sydney music scene and in broader contexts. With releases on Sidechains and Good Enuff, collaborations with Oh Boy, Mallrat and Boy Sim under his belt and over 1 million streams on Spotify, it looks as though Precious Metal is only going to cement Donatachi’s place as one of the most forward-thinking producers around.
