Get To Know: Lucy Neville

2 November 2018 | 9:28 am | Caitlin Medcalf

We first heard from LUCY NEVILLE back in 2015 with her debut EP Lady. At 22, she's been at it for quite a while so you wouldn't be wrong if you said she was born to do this. She's spent the last couple of years writing, releasing a couple of singles and honing her craft, and now she's back with a dazzling new single, 'Wasting Our Time'.

It's a navigational track, taking us through the trials and tribulations of experiencing a relationship falling apart. She uses this to tell a story of her potential love gone wrong, and paired with her airy vocals and a contrastively staccato instrumental section, it comes across as a super honest slice of electro-pop.

To celebrate the new single, we thought it would be cool to get to know Lucy a little more and hear about her journey and what is to come from the artist.

Who are you?

Avid reality-TV viewer, average yet enthusiastic dancer, BIG fan of chips, even BIGGER fan of dogs oh and I’m a 22-year-old a singer/songwriter from Sydney. I started releasing my music in 2015 and it feels like I’ve been caught in a total whirlwind ever since. I consider myself so lucky to be in the position I am, without discrediting the amount of work myself and the people around me have put in to this sparkly dream of mine. Feels 10/10 cool that I get to spend my days making music for people to hear all over the world, and then spend my nights making them dance with me as I unintentionally do star-jumps on stage (for video evidence hit me up).

How did Lucy Neville come to be?

Music was a big part of my childhood and my parents, especially my dad, made sure my sisters and I had a truly comprehensive understanding of all kinds of music. I was encouraged to try every instrument I could get my hands on and to sing as much and as loud as I wanted. I sang in a professional choir until I finished school and at that time it felt like a natural progression into being a solo artist.

I started working with my producer Marc Malouf and we started experimenting and discovered my sound. Turns out I love lush soundscapes and dreamy electro-pop.

The first single was 'On My Own', which is still one of my favourites, all the way up until my latest single, 'Wasting Our Time', which to me feels like such a high point of the evolution of my sound.

Between then and now have been some incredible highs; featuring in Teen Vogue, collaborating with other incredible artists around the world, a sold-out headline show and collecting 9,000,000 streams along the way.

What are we talking, vibe-wise?

I would describe my sound as ethereal electro-pop. As much as it is dance and electronic, I love hearing live instruments in the mix. A lot of the songs have live guitar and of course live vocals with loads of lush harmonies, the combination of electronic and live make for a pretty great live-show if I don’t say so myself.

I’m influenced by artists of all different genres, and it changes all the time, but the constants for me are; Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Vance Joy and Elderbrook.

Tell us a bit about your new single ‘Wasting Our Time’.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for a release as I am for 'Wasting Our Time'! I actually recorded a demo of the song in a totally different style, and followed our normal process of taking the track to Marc for production, and we just didn’t love the vibe. We had a day booked in the studio and when we got there it was double booked, so we went back to Marc’s and started hashing out the song on his guitar and completely changed the sound, vibe, everything. Such a happy accident and I’m so in love with the sound now.

Written by myself, production by Marc Malouf, mixing by Simon Cohen and mastering by Leon Zervos, such a dream team for my dream song.

What can we expect from you moving forward?

More music, more often. More shows, more often. We already have so many exciting things lined up for 2019 and I’m so ready for a massive year. As an independent artist, you really put in the hard yards, especially in the early years and it’s so exciting to see all that work paying off now. I’m so grateful for all of the people who have supported me this far, and far into the future. Bring it on!

Where can we hear more of your work?
