Body Type flirt with destiny in ‘Palms’ + announce debut EP
As luck would have it Sydney rockers BODY TYPE have not only dropped a single AND video for their dreamy cut ‘Palms’, they’ve also announced their debut self-titled EP, due out in October via Inertia and Partisan records. It comes as the quartet get ready to support Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever across Australia through September and October.
Body Type‘s sound is somewhere between 90s shoegaze/dream pop goodness with the fuzzy attitude of garage rock. Previous singles ‘Silver’ and ‘Arrow’ display this duality nicely, alongside visuals that exude a vibrant and DIY aesthetic. Of their latest track, Sophie McComish says, “‘Palms’ comes from observing moments of concatenation, when everything in your life lines up in a way that feels like the universe is trying to tell you something.”
‘Palms’ is Body Type‘s unique sound at its best. Chorus-y guitar sweeps drive the melody while a tremolo bassline sets the pace alongside driving percussion. Dual vocals offer a nice dichotomy, with the bold, garage-esque vocals of McComish contrasting nicely with the softer accompaniments that repeat like a round. Dropped throughout are little moments where the track takes a breather and allows dreamy guitar noodling to take the stage, giving the listener a trip into psychedelic territory before they’re reined back in.
The video, directed by Jack Wotton, perfectly complements with the track and continues Body Type‘s trend of lo-fi and tongue-in-cheek videos. Shot on Darug and Gundungurra land in the Blue Mountains, it depicts a palm-reading session that takes a trippy turn, as singer Sophie McComish enters a dreamscape where her bandmates in yellow cloaks chase her up a mountain. The band have really nailed the aesthetic here, with the old ‘Vaseline-on-the-lens’ trick giving the visuals a glowing retro look, alongside the camerawork which, through techniques like extreme close ups and crash zooms, have an almost B-Movie quality to them.
From their music to their videos, Body Type have really set themselves apart in the world of Aussie rock. Keep your eyes peeled for their debut EP when it drops on October 19th, and be sure to catch them on their tour with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever (the dates for which you can check below!)
