Live Review: Pink Matter drop mesmerising visuals for 'Cleo'

3 August 2018 | 2:20 pm | Max Lewis

Brisbane neo-soul quartet Pink Matter have returned with a striking video for 'Cleo', ahead of their debut EP out on August 10th.

Brisbane quartet PINK MATTER have continued their shift to a dark and nuanced neo-soul sound with their video for their latest track 'Cleo'. Directed by Caleb De Leon, the video is an evocative and experimental take on fleeting desire. It's the latest offering from Pink Matter ahead of the release of their debut EP Human Error on August 10th.

Pink Matter debuted with 'Quicksand' back in January, introducing us to a warm neo-soul sound simultaneously unique and comfortably familiar, like a blanket made out of Jazz. The group then turned this sound on its head with 'Cleo', turning the once comforting, laid-back sound into a sinister and seductive ode to impending disaster. Netting them love from 4zzz and Triple J as well as spots at Jungle Love Festival and the recently announced BIGSOUND lineup, 'Cleo' was a different side of Pink Matter, a side that has been enhanced with the latest video.

Building upon the track's idea of an "unobtainable figure", the visuals for 'Cleo' constantly shift, never once letting your eyes focus on something tangible. Members of Pink Matter dance erratically in a black void, at times covered by sharp shadows, and other times masked by harsh back projections of lights and effects. There's some truly gorgeous shots here, with figures in striking tableaux glowing in front of streams of light, or weaving in and out of blurry close-ups. It's hypnotic much in the same way that the titular 'Cleo' is - teasing you with something clear before suddenly changing tact, keeping you guessing until the very end.

It's always great to see musicians keep fans on their toes, and the one-two punch of 'Cleo' and the accompanying video has done just that. With a debut EP just on the horizon and a steam of shows just after, big things are in store for Pink Matter, and we can't wait to see how they shake things up next.
