Tkay Maidza makes her long awaited return with ‘Flexin”
For the past five (!!!) years, TKAY MAIDZA has been an undeniable force in the Australian music industry. Having truly earned the accolade of ‘trailblazer’, Maidza has never been shy to go against exactly what’s expected of her. Never in the same spot for too long, she’s like a genre nomad – just when you get comfortable with one sound, she switches it up on you. But one thing remains consistent – she never stops growing. If ‘Flexin” is a snapshot of where Tkay is at in 2018, then we’re in for one huge, wild ride.
‘Flexin” marks Tkay‘s first track of her own since 2017’s ‘Glorious’, and yet the sound is so radically different. The beat is wild and inflammatory, guaranteed to get any crowd going, and her delivery has shifted completely. We’re used to quickfire rap melodies from Maidza, but ‘Flexin’ sees her go all the way in. Every lyric is practically screamed, but it’s still a certified earworm. Tapping DUCKWRTH, who has had a massive year himself, for a feature was a stroke of genius, as he matches Tkay‘s intensity bar for bar.
Of the song, Tkay says it’s about having complete and unshakeable self-confidence: “‘Flexin’ is an ode to being yourself and being unapologetic for it,” she said in a statement. “I went to a Mixpak dancehall night & rave in New York the night before I wrote this song with my friends and it was one of the most fun nights I had in a while. I was still awake at 8am and I remembered I had a session that day at 1pm, so I didn’t sleep and went to the studio. I wrote two songs that I really liked in that session and ‘Flexin’’ was one of them. So, yeah, I’m not sorry that I went to a rave and didn’t sleep because there wouldn’t be ‘Flexin’’.
