Live Review: Jess Kent continues making gold with 'Bass Bumps'

17 July 2018 | 1:59 pm | Jackson Langford

By the time 'Bass Bumps' reaches its closing seconds, it becomes pretty clear that no one is doing pop music quite like Jess Kent is doing pop music.

When JESS KENT burst onto the scene in explosive colour with 'Get Down' back in 2015, it was clear that we were dealing with a future pop superstar. The way she manipulates her voice to bounce off any beat is exciting, and keeps you on your toes. You're never quite sure whats she's going to do next, but it's a guarantee it's going to be fun. But, with her latest offering, 'Bass Bumps', Jess Kent has elevated herself to new heights as it might just be her most exciting song to date.

The best thing about 'Bass Bumps' is the demonstration of Kent's range. She gives us a myriad of different vocal deliveries condensed into a three-and-a-half minute track that inject the song with a huge dosing of substance. Following in the footsteps of Charli XCX, Jess Kent is creating pop music that is so pop it becomes subversive. It's definitely accessible, but still has a grit, an edge and the coolness she's become known for to set her apart from the pack.

By the time 'Bass Bumps' reaches its closing seconds, it becomes pretty clear that no one is doing pop music quite like Jess Kent is doing pop music. The way she ping pongs between vocal deliveries in such a short space of time, while still keeping coherent, is a talent some of pop's veterans haven't even mastered yet. If nothing else, 'Bass Bumps' proves that Jess Kent does, indeed, run this shit.
