Live Review: Alex The Astronaut returns with 'Waste Of Time'

25 July 2018 | 10:54 am | Emma Jones

Australian darling ALEX THE ASTRONAUT has continued her rapid rise to the top, becoming one of the country's most exciting and promising artists, and one of the most loved too. Her endearing, genuine authenticity has seen her remain true to herself while acquiring a loyal and loving fanbase, and with every new single that fanbase continues to grow exponentially thanks to her ability to sing about the everyday things in such an expertly put-together way.

Following in the same vein as greats like COURTNEY BARNETT or PAUL KELLYAlex The Astronaut is a masterful story teller, a beautiful songwriter and a self-assured singer which is a guaranteed winning combo yet again on her latest single, 'Waste Of Time'.

Encompassing her vulnerability and sprightly self-analysis, Alex The Astronaut once again invites us into her life, her moment in time that she's wishing to share in all its glory - flaws and all - and by doing so, she creates a special connection with each and every listener that hears her. With her trusty guitar, some Casio synth flourishes and a jangly beat that creates the foundations of a song practically begging for an enormous singalong at her next show, it's the humanity and the realness that makes Alex the Astronaut so special, and 'Waste Of Time' is another glowing example of this. Written earlier this year in the UK ahead of a performance at The Great Escape Festival, Alex The Astronaut said of her latest single, "I’ve always been a very particular person, maybe a bit of a control freak, and that meant that I wrote songs about love in a very controlled way...I think Waste of Time is about me letting go of that."

Having just wrapped up a tour with STELLA DONNELLY earlier this year as well as an appearance at The Great Escape FestivalAlex The Astronaut is set to make 2018 even bigger than 2017, which saw her release two EPs, land #23 in the triple J Hottest 100 with 'Not Worth Hiding' and be catapulted onto the national (and international) stage. She's just played at Splendour In The Grass over the weekend, and she's still got a couple more shows for the rest of the year. We're just hoping there's more where this song came from, but for now, this will do us just fine.
