Live Review: Maribelle tackles love and confusion in her video for 'I'm a Mess Without You'

Melbourne singer-songwriter-producer Maribelle has dropped an honest yet bright video for 'I'm a Mess Without You', directed by the John Fish team.

Hot on the heels of her impeccable single 'I'm a Mess Without You', Melbourne singer-songwriter-producer MARIBELLE has dropped an equally bright and bouncy music video. It's as quirky as it is personal, and the perfect expression of Maribelle's unique style.

Maribelle first won us over with her phenomenal debut, Overtake, in 2016. Tracks like 'Shout' displayed her knack for honest lyrics framed through delightful pop melodies designed to stick in your mind, enhanced by her glittery production style. In the wake of Overtake she's enjoyed spots at FOMO and Bali Songwriter’s Invitational as well as a mass of songwriting credits for acts like Young Franco and Kilter. It's been a busy two years for Maribelle but with 'I'm a Mess Without You', she's shown she isn't slowing down any time soon.

Maribelle has said that the song is autobiographical, dealing with her confusion over feelings for another woman, and the pain this confusion caused. The video, directed by the John Fish team and starring Briony Farrell and Tahlee Faraday alongside Maribelle, extends these feelings of uncertainty while maintaining the singer's infectiously upbeat vibe. With a vibrant colour palette and slow-motion visuals, we witness the growing tension between two women in a group of friends, flirting and holding hands until they eventually kiss. Every element in this buildup is bright and happy, but it suddenly switches in light of the kiss. The switch to muted colour grading, fast cuts and twitchy handheld shots is immediate as the impact of the kiss and what it signifies dawns on the characters. All the while, Maribelle performs the song with a variety of backdrops, the camera dangling precariously above her head and spinning like a carousel.

The video is great to look at and fits the song perfectly, but it's the care running underneath that really makes it excel. The editing and visuals really enhances the shifting tension and confusion of the characters  - as Maribelle herself puts it, "that terrifying feeling of falling in love for the first time." It's another home-run for the Melbourne artist and a sign that no matter what medium she lends herself to, she can do no wrong.

Maribelle is also hitting up Sydney and Melbourne in August to launch 'I'm a Mess Without You' - check out the details below!
