Live Review: Sampology drops 'Mt Glorious' and announces national tour

4 June 2018 | 8:23 am | Max Lewis

Sampology has returned with 'Mt. Glorious', a sublime combination of natural, analog and acoustic sounds in an ethereal electronica package.

It's been a while since Brisbane producer SAMPOLOGY (aka Sam Poggioli) has dropped a track, but he's proved the wait was worth it with 'Mt Glorious', the first taste of an upcoming 6-track EP. To celebrate he's also announced a national tour starting at the end of June.

The work of Sampology has always been based around lush electronic soundscapes encompassing tightly produced club magic. His music often explores nature through field recordings and manipulated samples; a style which his EP, Natural Selections, displayed flawlessly. 'Mt Glorious' sees him staying true to his roots while stepping up his game, delivering a solid package of ethereal electronica.

Named after a rainforest in Brisbane's National Park, 'Mt Glorious' envelops you in the atmosphere of dense wildlife, replete with sounds like birdsong and running water, all the while Sampology builds a steady atmosphere of electronic and acoustic sounds. Spacey drum machines keep a jittery pace while grand piano and strings played by all-girl quartet Meraki nicely counter the warmth of the analog loops. Vocals from Hannah Macklin soar in and out, sometimes looping erratically and other times simply floating above the lush sounds Sampology has on display.

With layers of different sounds, 'Mt Glorious' is chaotic at times, but it never breaks the sublime atmosphere. Rather, it evokes the often musical sounds of nature in a way that feels raw and spontaneous. Sometimes field recordings can feel gimmicky, or get in the way of the music on display, but here Sampology has combined nature with electronic and acoustic sounds in such a unique and impressive way, where not a single element sounds out of place. Be sure to catch 'Mt Glorious' and potentially other new tunes alongside Sampology's homemade visuals on his national tour, starting on the 22nd of June at the Gasometer in Melbourne.
