Just Shy is intoxicating on ‘Maybe I Can Turn This Night Around’

There’s a certain isolation JUST SHY uses in ‘Maybe I Can Turn This Night Around’ that feels all too relatable. It’s that drunken thought you have as you stumble through the masses in a club towards your next drink. It’s that brief intoxicated head spin you have when you finally sit down after hours of dancing. It’s that awful feeling, when you finally get a moment to yourself, that reality catches up with you, amplifying any distant feelings of melancholy or darkness and projecting it at the front and centre of your drunken mind. But, at the end of that darkness rests a light, and that light is what ‘Maybe I Can Turn This Night Around’ is all about.

Just Shy treats this sad and synthy spiral with the utmost delicateness. The majority of the song puts his gorgeous voice at the forefront, while synths beam around him. As the song progresses, the beat hyper intensifies and the synths become rapid fire, but Just Shy is still moving at his own pace. “I can’t keep up/I’m feeling down/My seventh drink/I think I’ll drown/But I tell myself, ‘maybe I can turn this night’,” he eerily sings as the melody darkens. It’s the hushed repetition of the word ‘maybe’ that haunts us until the song’s closure, taking us back to those nights where a little sadness and too much alcohol sent us down to a place of no return. It’s bleak, but it’s real, and Just Shy has completely nailed it.

The grim reality of Just Shy‘s ‘Maybe I Can Turn This Night Around’ is creepy and confronting, but one worth hearing back at ourselves anyway. It’s a journey through a drunken stupor that we’re in the passenger seat for, and just as you think you’ll want this ride to be over, Just Shy continues to pique your curiosity and you figure it’s worth staying for just one more drink.
