Just last month, we heard the emotive debut of Sydney artist FLOWER BOY 卓颖贤 (aka NON CHALANT), and now today, Purple Sneakers is bringing you the first listen of her anticipated debut EP. Titled FASCI(N)ATION, the five tracks detail her journey as an artist from being a classically trained musician with no idea what to do to bonafide producer/singer/songwriter and a fully fledged identity as an artist.
From the opening glitches of first track 'BROKEN GLASS' to the palpable emotion of lead single 'i just want 2 adore u', the vulnerability, intimacy and rawness of Flower Boy 卓颖贤's art is clear from the get go. Refusing to cater to particular genre "rules" or trends, there's a certain power that comes with knowing who you are or what you're about, and that power is on full display in FASCI(N)ATION. Unafraid of airing emotions or deep thoughts, the sonic exploration continues with 'VELVET' and into 'a shallow pool', highlighting Flower Boy 卓颖贤's vast influences from Chopin to Lana Del Rey, nightcore to ambient. Finishing up with 'SKIN.LIPS', which serves as a cathartic finale to the four songs preceding it, it's clear that Flower Boy 卓颖贤 has spent a lot of time carefully putting this EP together, and its this intricate consideration that makes it such an immersive and intimate experience.
Speaking of her Flower Boy 卓颖贤 project, NON CHALANT said, “As a person who doesn’t like to share my feelings and secrets, Flower Boy 卓颖贤 has become a bizarre kind of middleman... a very sloppy emotional translator. Sharing my feelings is intoxicating, and I feel a cheeky kind of glee that nobody really knows the full story behind my tracks.” This may be true, but the tracks' themes are universal enough for any listener to insert their own experiences to keep the music relevant, and because of this, it creates a powerful and genuine connection. Set to launch FASCI(N)ATION next month, this show is not one to miss. Check out full details below!
