Live Review: Maya Hirasedo is here to get you in your feelings on 'Cocaine'

14 May 2018 | 10:01 am | Holly O'Neill

Melbourne singer-songwriter MAYA HIRASEDO pulls out her best introspective RnB vibes on 'Cocaine', delivering emotion and pain beyond her 20 years.

'Cocaine' is the second single from singer songwriter MAYA HIRASEDO, but you wouldn't be able to pick it. The Melbournite has had her finger on the pulse of underground Australian hip hop and RnB for some time now as one of the foundational members of label Valve Sounds. Exploring her own musical project has seen her link up with members of the local scene, and on her sophomore single 'Cocaine' collaborate with Sydney's own AYWY. This polished RnB ballad is an introspective slow jam that'll get you deep in your feelings.

Woozy pads and half tempo drums create a dreamlike soundscape for Hirasedo to soar over. Singing with wisdom beyond her twenty years, you can sense the pain behind her polished delivery. Her emotive songwriting and gorgeous harmonies and fills create a complete shift in mood upon listening, enveloping the listener in the song's story and inviting their own introspection.

Aywy's production is a perfect match for Maya Hirasedo's sensuous delivery, with every element perfectly understated and hazy to accentuate the mood her vocals convey. Even though the subject matter may be sensitive, Hirasedo's strength and range shines through, remaining unwavering in her emotional clarity and vulnerability.
