‘Research’ new sounds against familiar percussion with Feels
Listen to any track by FEELS and you’d be able to tell straight away, they’re passionate about their percussion. The Perth duo, made up of Elise Reitze and Rosie Taylor, are both classically trained percussionists turned producers who use this approach to make some completely unique dance music. The result is a selection of whimsical, future bass inspired soundscapes grounded with complex layers of polyrhythms and intertwining beats.
After being chosen to attend the Ableton summit in Berlin and getting time at the Sydney studios at the start of this year, Feels started experimenting with new tools. “In the studio we had access to synthesizers, drum machines and effects pedals we had never used before. On our first day in the studio, we decided we would ‘research’ – we experimented with new sounds,” said Elise of the experience writing the new single.
Built from a simple chord progression, ‘Research’ of course layers plenty of percussion and short hits of synths to make for a tight track. Every note and beat is precise, sharply making itself known as quickly as it’s gone. The hyperactive hats play against the fluttery kicks, but it’s the glossy synths that are the standout here with Feels‘ “research” into their new gear having really paid off.
Compared to their previous releases, this new track is a whole new level for Feels. It still retains their love of stark minimalism that really lets the complexity of the rhythms shine, but with the new addition of rubbery melodies and deep pads. ‘Research’ is the first of a handful of incoming singles from the duo to come out this year, and with this single already standing apart from their previous work, we can’t wait to see what else they have in store for us.
‘Research’ by Feels is out now through Spirit Level, and avaible for stream and download here.
