Live Review: ALTA take on house textures on 'Now You Want Me'

20 April 2018 | 8:48 am | Holly O'Neill

Filled with the melancholy timbres and soulful vocals we know them for, 'Now You Want Me' sees ALTA take on dance rhythms with their own flair.

It's been about half a year since we've heard from Melbourne dance pop duo ALTA, with their singles 'Fix It' and 'Sentiment' featuring on heavy rotation last year here at Purple Sneakers. Their new single, 'Now You Want Me', has our banger detectors registering off the charts, and proves they certainly are artists to watch this year. Filled with the melancholy timbres and soulful vocals we love them for, on 'Now You Want Me' ALTA moves from the sparse compositions of their previous works into driving house.

The duo, Julius Dowson (production) and Hannah Lesser (vocals), seem at ease amongst house textures, giving us their own unique take on the genre. Their signature syncopated percussion and fuzzy pads are ramped up a notch in this one, driven by an energetic tempo. Over a bed of moody chords, delicate vocals float disguising their biting intensity behind a smooth delivery.

As 'Now You Want Me' chugs along, slotting in atmospheric builds amid percussive verses, it intensifies as it leads to an emotive closing minute. Sampled screeches and dissonant yells pierce through layered vocal harmonies, as the density of the synths envelops the listener. Singing the woes of a tumultuous break up over body moving rhythms is bound to make for an emotional club catharsis on a dance floor near you.

ALTA's eclectic rhythms have landed them a spot on this year's Splendour in the Grass lineup so if you managed to nab a ticket (LUCKY YOU) make sure you get a good spot for their set on Friday. Hopefully they'll have even more new tracks and introspective dance pop for us by then, and we can't wait.
