Live Review: Listen to Fortunes.' garage-influenced remix of Tora's soulful 'Too Much'

23 January 2018 | 8:58 am | Camilla Patini

You’ll find yourself vibing hard to this remix of TORA’s ‘Too Much’ by FORTUNES. released just a few days ago. Their production here kicks Tora’s slow-burning soul-pop into high gear with added snares, skittering beats and some high-pitched vocal manipulations. All in all, they’ve turned the original into a more energetic and grimier jam while retaining its crooning soulfulness.

Barnaby Matthews and Conor McCabe’s early releases earned them a loyal following in their native New Zealand and across the pond in Australia, with the pair signing to Future Classic in 2016. Since then, they’ve released two EPs and a handful of singles and remixes, cementing their reputation as masters of soulful R&B. Bringing fresh energy to classic soul and intimacy to their more electronic productions, Fortunes. have become a consistent crowd favourite, performing at most major Australian festivals, and most notably supporting KELELA at her headline show in Melbourne earlier this month.

On this remix, they create a world of reverberating space and ambient synths, but with a faster pace and edgier sound than the original. Lyrically, this may be a song about complicated emotions – “I’m not supposed to love you / But I do / Too much” – but it’s bubbling with energy. You could easily imagine its vocal refrain being delivered as a scream, or a sob, but Fortunes. sends it fluttering up into their arrangements, skilfully designed to get people moving. This is a sophisticated remix by Fortunes. that shows what great producers they are.
