Live Review: Alice Ivy drops chill new single ‘Chasing Stars’

15 January 2018 | 9:50 am | Max Lewis

Melbourne producer Alice Ivy has given us a magical taste of her debut LP with 'Chasing Stars', featuring Bertie Blackman.

Melbourne electronic producer ALICE IVY has been generating buzz for a couple of years now with her unique blend of sample-heavy electronics and downtempo hip-hop sounds. With fans waiting tirelessly for a debut album she’s finally delivered – I’m Dreaming will drop February 9th, and she’s shared the smooth-as-butter single ‘Chasing Stars’ ft. Bertie Blackman to celebrate.

Produced entirely by the 24-year-old, I’m Dreaming sees Alice Ivy teaming up with the likes of E^ST, Georgia Van Etten and Bertie Blackman, whose vocals soar above a sea of looping samples and catchy beats on 'Chasing Stars'.

With glittery piano loops Alice sets a nostalgic, almost magical tone before Blackman’s layered vocals steal the show. Boosted by heavy percussion and laid-back bass, the track floats along at a perfect pace while more samples of saxophone, sound bites and synths make their way through the fuzz. What I love about ‘Chasing Stars’ is that it isn’t overly dynamic or constantly changing – Alice Ivy strikes gold and doesn’t stop for a second, enveloping the listener in swirling samples and stunning vocals that don’t let up until the very end.

There’s clear influence from plunderphonic greats The Avalanches here (with the film samples especially), yet Alice Ivy takes this love and makes something uniquely her own. She effortlessly bridges a gap between ambient, hip-hop and pop that’s as bold as it effective and is endlessly refreshing because of this. If her debut album, I’m Dreaming, proves as solid as ‘Chasing Stars’, Alice Ivy will surely cement her reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the land of Aussie electronica.
