Live Review: Cosmo's Midnight drop shimmering remix of Jill Scott's 'Cross My Mind'

19 December 2017 | 8:05 am | Camilla Patini

Sydney-based COSMO'S MIDNIGHT are a duo fast on the rise, having already had one hell of a year. In 2017, they wowed crowds at Splendour in the Grass, set off on their first international tour, and released two new singles ('History’ and ‘Mind Off’), both of which reached #1 most-played status on Triple J. Now, bored with sitting on new music (and with Christmas just round the corner – thanks boys), they’ve released a shiny new bootleg, a remix of Jill Scott’s 2004 R&B single, ‘Cross My Mind’.

Opening with some seriously sharp hand clapping, this Midnight edition retains Cross' soulfulness, with her soft cries fanning elegantly over a bouncy beat. As the single heats up, Cosmo's Midnight reveal more of Cross' voice, but repurposed; it's chopped up and pitched up in a way Cross herself probably never imagined it. Its squeakiness is offset by a layer of softer beats and a deep, rumbling bassline – combined, its sound is much easier on the ears.

Peppered through with some really great production flourishes – tinges of shimmer and weird stutters – this is a blissful release, undulating with clubland verve.

Hear it live at Falls Festival, where the boys are scheduled to play over the new year.

P.S. There's some big Cosmo's Midnight news to be announced in early 2018, but for now, it’s time to celebrate and turn this jam up.
