Live Review: MEZKO use gritty, powerful electropop in their new video for 'Steady On'

2 November 2017 | 8:19 am | Camilla Patini

You can think of Laura Bailey and Kat Harley’s (MEZKO) Polychronic EP as a recreation of a mindstate, the altered state of a trip which, in this case, ends far too soon (that’s a compliment).

The second track off Polychronic, their brand new EP, is titled ‘Steady On’, and the Sydney duo has just released a music video to go along with it. Directed by Joel Burrows, it's a powerful and propulsive track with a Euro-trance-y, psychedelic vibe that merges influences from across the board; it's 'like the child of Kraftwerk married Giorgio Moroder and started an LCD Soundsystem tribute band with him,' as our own Max Lewis aptly puts it.

MEZKO pepper the song with rave-y, industrial sounds, here and there injecting a well-placed ringing like the sharp, crisp sound of a coin dropping, really invoking that mind-altering chemical state. Like their track ‘Everyone’, it’s driven by Giorgio Moroder-inspired synths and paired with rock guitar riffs and funky techno vibes. These all merge into one powerful, thumping electronic sound, reaching a crescendo that floods listeners’ brains with serotonin, which is ironic given the video’s stated theme: depression and being right on the edge of a downward spiral.

The music video captures this mindstate perfectly, however, showcasing moody visuals with night time shots of an unidentified motorist driving into the what we imagine is the dark unknown. These are interspersed with panning close-ups of Bailey and Harley looking rather depressed in what could be their own home, surrounded by instruments and other music paraphernalia. The video encapsulates the song's dark and moody vibes in a way that's effortlessly cool.

With this new EP, MEZKO have been finding their sound and experimenting with new techniques, an effort which has clearly paid off (they’ve also recently signed to Inertia Music, which can only mean big things to come). They say the album is "about embracing chaos and giving [them]selves the freedom to make whatever music feels good." If that’s the case, they’ve definitely hit the mark with this one – it’ll get your blood and fists pumping in no time.

MEZKO have just announced a national tour.
