Live Review: PREMIERE: Feel 'Something' with G Elenil's new single
Brisbane's G Elenil has dropped the first taste of her forthcoming debut EP with 'SOMETHING', a catchy, tongue-in-cheek cut full of biting flow and beats.
Brisbane artist G Elenil has given us the first taste of her upcoming EP with 'SOMETHING' - alongside a trippy video directed by the Que Film Collective. It's the first single from her forthcoming debut EP Kin.
Toeing the line between a rapper, hip-hop artist and electronic producer, G Elenil has already won massive acclaim with singles like 'God Enough', 'Cut That Boi Off' and 'Gold'. She's also played alongside Little Simz, Futuristic and Midas.Gold, and has also made guest appearances at Listen Out & BIGSOUND via her verse on the Fempre$$ Cypher. With many strings to her bow, she produces, writes, performs and even designs all of her releases, and also runs her own streetwear label, Plane Street.
'SOMETHING' sees G Elenil taking aim at her neighbourhood, sexual independence and culture with tongue firmly planted in cheek, and the playfully unique flow we've come to expect from her. Trap production pairs nicely with some twinkling synths and more natural electric guitar, laying the foundation for G's impeccable flow which literally doesn't miss a beat. Her lyrics play wonderfully with her ethos of the "full 360" wherein she acts as both archetypes of the 'ideal' female artist: 'smart and wholesome' or 'sexual and deviant'. The peppy production sells the former while the biting wordplay evokes the latter, leading to a multi-faceted track whose significance extends beyond its >3 minute runtime.

The accompanying video rides the irony train even further, with some kaleidoscopic, even vaporwave inspired effects overlaying footage of G and her crew dancing and hanging out in suburban Brisbane. Lamp-shading her dismay at her once-beloved neighbourhood becoming hyper-commercial, shots include G and her entourage dancing on top of and around cars, trees and parks while pictures of Iggy Azalea, the mythical Medusa and Golden Retrievers flash on screen. It's delightfully goofy, expanding upon the themes of the track's lyrics and the playful production without taking itself too seriously in the process.
