Live Review: Polographia team up with Rush Midnight for sultry new song 'Heart Attack'

15 November 2017 | 11:30 am | Camilla Patini

After spending years (by choice) unaffiliated with a label, the Sydney duo comprised of Moktar Youngblood and Daniel Finn, better known as Polographia, have now struck a deal with Sydney-based Sweat It Out!, joining the likes of What So Not and RUFUS. Following up on their third EP Friends (2016), they've just released a new song, 'Heart Attack', which is really, really good. It features Brooklyn artist Rush Midnight on the vocals. As far as collabs go, it's a match made in heaven. With their new single, Polographia delve deeper into their songwriting capabilities and, as usual, manufacture good vibes with their diffuse and rhythmic dance music. This time, however, it's a house-tinged affair.

On the track, Rush Midnight's husky voice is sexy and smooth, gliding effortlessly over Polographia's slinky beats, evoking the glitz and glamour of the New York funk scene that inspired the song. It’s a solid release that sounds great on headphones and even better coming out of speakers in a car or at a party. Built on retro-sounding synths and an infectious groove, it'll get you moving in no time but it's equally good for listening to in the bath. There are some nice, delicate production flourishes throughout like the subtle bass strumming in the background that really bring out the song's funk side.

It's overall very sensual and not just because of its cover art featuring a kissing zebra and pig. The synths give it the sense of romantic nostalgia Polographia are known for, evoking lazy summer afternoons, while the songwriting and lyrics are top notch. Especially rhythmic and catchy are the lines, 'Come fuck with me / in any town / it can be public or underground / it’s okay if you love this / right here and now,’ with Rush Midnight's soulful vocals fitting the band's sound perfectly. Polographia have really raised the stakes with this track – it's one of their best yet.
