Live Review: Intensity is high on King IV's new banger, 'Bump'

10 November 2017 | 12:03 pm | Holly O'Neill

KING IV delivers a trap banger with a twist. 'Bump' solidifies her sound with intense production, impressive vocals and a commanding energy.

Melbourne's KING IV has been making a name for herself as one to watch in Australia's electronica and dance scene. She's released a handful of stellar dark, EDM-meets-alternative-RnB singles, opened her home town's Listen Out this year and put out a diverse remix EP of her last single with RROMARIN. On her new track, 'Bump', she solidifies her sound with intense production and a commanding energy.

Building off piercing sirens and vocal samples, the track launches into a driving beat with heavy hits of bass that push the song forward. Bright clicks and beeps of machinery contrast the intense low ends, with the sharp percussion cutting through the distorted bass chords.

King IV shows off her vocal range on 'Bump', sounding raspsy and hypnotically deep in the verses and soaring and commanding in the choruses. She has a firm grasp on her specific sound and has defined herself by her own hand in this track, with few other artists to compare her to.

This grand soundscape, dense with contrasting layers of warped synths and syncopated percussion, is grounded with King IV's unique vocals. 'Bump' almost feels like a trap banger with a twist; still dark and huge but with more of a human centre as she sings about “craving explosive and immersive experiences, and never settling for less than a high-intensity life.”

If you want to catch King IV in the flesh, be sure to head to her show with SAATSUMA, Mezko and more for Melbourne Music Week on November 23rd, more info here.
