Live Review: D∆WN celebrates her independence on 'Stopwatch'

6 November 2017 | 9:05 am | Holly O'Neill

'Stopwatch' is the new single from genre chameleon D∆WN, a glistening pop tune about valuing your own energy in a relationship.

D∆WN is somewhat of a genre chameleon. She's been in a pop girl group, released three albums of boundary pushing RnB tunes, has become a dance music sweetheart and now is releasing even more diverse singles. Her most recent offering, 'Stopwatch', has been released through frequent collaborator MACHINEDRUM's label IAMSIAM, and is a glistening pop tune about valuing your own energy in a relationship.

The track feels energetic and celebratory, lending to the lyrics theme of moving up and over a time-sucking ex. D∆WN's vocal delivery is self assured, knowing that she's got better things to invest her energy into. She sums it up best singing that she "ain't got no time, to waste any time on you."

With her past releases having a more experimental edge, this single is a pure pop offering with touches of dancehall and club influences. 'Stopwatch' samples acoustic guitar alongside glassy marimbas over the top of a hip moving percussive line. The production from Machinedrum is relatively sparse, letting D∆WN's vocals shine.

She celebrates her independence over detuned chords, with warm harmonies and vocal fills echoing the sentiments of the lyrics. Her golden pipes seem to fit over any instrumental and 'Stopwatch' is further proof of that. Over her career, it seems the main thing that remains consistent about D∆WN is her ability to surprise us.

D∆WN's single 'Stopwatch' is out now and available for purchase and streaming through IAMSIAM.
