Live Review: Listen to Ash Hendriks' exquisite 'Lost in Dreams'

2 November 2017 | 8:24 am | Camilla Patini

When Ash Hendriks' debut single 'Tired' (2012) hit airwaves nationally under the moniker Leure, she became known for her haunting, seductive vocals, spacious beats and sublime production. She then went on to share the stage with acts like Tame Impala, Chet Faker, Cashmere Cat, Pond and Methyl Ethyl to name but a few.

Since releasing ‘Rush’ in 2015, Hendriks has been fairly busy, touring with Woodes, completing an Amsterdam residency and relocating from her hometown Perth to Sydney, where she is now hard at work writing, producing and honing her new music and live show.

Now she has released a new single called ‘Lost in Dreams’. It’s a nice slice of melodic, bass-heavy electro-pop, full of ambient synths, sharp beats and broody, reverb-y shimmers. Hendriks sounds lovely and ethereal, her delicate voice drifting smoothly over the song’s enchanting melody. Her voice is pitched somewhere between Grimes' off-kilter melodicism and a dreamier, huskier tone. 'Baby, I want too much / baby, I'm too far in,' she sings, to what might be a lover or romantic interest. She takes on a fantasy persona, singing, 'I can be reckless...I can be anything you wanted.' But she suddenly turns sour, singing 'You were wasting all my time,' suggesting perhaps the bitter end of a relationship; the lyrics are overall too indistinct to form a coherent narrative but it hardly matters – her voice is eerily and alluringly dreamy even when addressing possible failures.

'Lost in Dreams' takes us deep into the achingly beautiful electronic world that Hendriks is synonymous with, but with a confidence and polish that Leure shyed away from. Hopefully there'll be more great stuff like this from Hendriks soon!
