Sydney production duo STEREOGAMOUS (aka dance music icons Jonny Seymour and Paul Mac) has teamed up with crooner SHAUN J. WRIGHT to create an irresistible and provocative club tune called 'Homewrecker'. The track is a six and a half minute banger accompanied by a video that immerses the viewer in the wild world of Berlin's nightlife.
With an hypnotic chorus and a bouncy dance beat, the 'Homewrecker' video is a joyful, hedonistic romp, despite its intense lyrics. "Should we defy out desire?" sings Shaun J. Wright, as the video follows three characters through a night of partying and longing that stretches into the daylight. His honey-smooth vocals are the perfect counterpoint to the sticky, distorted beats that thump underneath, conveying the confusing, powerful feelings that can turn a night out into an adventure.
But 'Homewrecker' is not just a catchy track, it also unapologetically celebrates queer club culture. Thanks to the actions of Australia's government, those who identify outside of the heterosexual gender binary are currently facing a particularly heightened level of bigotry. "This is how a queer community deals while under pressure / harsh conditions," Stereogamous tweeted about the video, emphasising that unity and celebration are as much as part of the resistance as overt protest.
'Homewrecker' is defiant and powerful, but it is also hugely enjoyable. The genius of Stereogamous is to show that the two are not mutually exclusive, because the queer community deserves to celebrate just as much as (if not more than) anyone else.
