Live Review: Sachi recruit Mick Jenkins for their latest banger, 'Lowkey'

The impossibly young Nick Crisp and Will Thomas from Auckland, New Zealand, better known as Sachi, have just released a catchy club banger called ‘Lowkey’ featuring Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins.

Sachi first emerged in 2016 with the release of their debut album Lunch With Bianca; they’ve since put out a number of remixes, including one of fellow Kiwi Lorde’s hugely successful ‘Green Light’. Co-signs from Diplo, Zane Lowe and Vince Staples, as well as a long run of support and headline shows across New Zealand and Australia have greatly increased their profile – clearly, they’ve come a long way in a short time.

‘Lowkey’ may be a one-size-fits-all promotional banger (some of the lyrics border on blank clichés: ‘Lipstick on my neck / that liquor on your breath now’, for instance), but it’s catchy as fuck and meticulously produced. As for the guest vocals, Jenkins spits what are arguably the best bars in this song, thematically elevating it onto a whole other level. ‘How we got each other / still feel so lonely,’ he raps over a sexy beat. Why Jenkins – who raps in his own music about the empty pursuit of money, fame and sex (amongst other things) – decided to lend his artistry as a rapper and writer to an (albeit legit) song about hitting up chicks at the club is anyone’s guess, however. Sachi have to be applauded for their artistic flexibility though, marrying rap and some fresh influences to their usual sexy-smooth beats.

Sachi may not be reinventing electro-pop here but they're for sure bringing the goods in terms of great club music. If their popular success to date is anything to go by, they're an act you should definitely keep your eyes on.
