Live Review: Woodes releases a dark and pared back Night Version of 'Run For It'

4 September 2017 | 6:46 pm | Camilla Patini

Melbourne-based producer WOODES has just released a pared back version of her huge hit ‘Run For It’, this time releasing a 'Night Version'. ‘Run For It’ was the first single since the release of her debut, self-titled EP released in 2016. This new version is a slower, more ethereal track. It's overwhelmingly gloomy, but gorgeous at the same time.

Opening up with incantatory vocals, Woodes has added in some dark sounds and instrumentation. Doing away with some of the heavier production and drums of ‘Run For It’, she's brought her husky voice into greater relief, creating an atmosphere which is deeply haunting and very intimate. The repetition of ‘Make a run/Run for it’ sounds almost like a spell, and gives the track a dark and moody feel. A meandering synth contributes to the song's dark underbelly. The addition of live instrumentation is a good choice: the sax and piano are both gorgeous and help to relieve that unsettling feeling created earlier in the track.

After kicking off the year at SXSW, and quickly becoming one to watch, Woodes isn't slowing down any time soon as she readies another new EP, set for release later this year.
