Live Review: ESESE deliver the perfect springtime vibe with 'Far'

1 September 2017 | 3:10 pm | Max Lewis

Melbourne neo-soul collective ESESE have teased the first of their new material with 'Far', a breezy track perfect for springtime.

ESESE

ESESE, aka Eastern Seaboard Electric Soul Ensemble are an 8 piece hailing from Melbourne that combine a myriad of influences from RnB, rap and neo-soul, giving them a contemporary twist and plenty of chill to match. Starting out as a Triple J Unearthed feature artist, they released their debut EP Act 1: Hancoq in 2015, followed up with a slot at St Jerome's Laneway Festival 2016. Now, they've regrouped, and with some new material finally ready for our ears, they're back.

ESESE have been rumoured to be working on a full-length release, so their new single 'Far' could be the first taste of what's to come - and what's to come looks like an evolution of the grooves they dished up on Act 1: Hancoq.

At the core of 'Far' is a harp and vocal sample that feels right out of A Tribe Called Quest track. A snappy bassline, warm keys and relaxed vocals complete the picture, while occasional guitar and brass add extra flavour in all the right spots. It's rather minimal how the beat plods along at the same rate and the track never flares up, but it sets up a perfect rhythm that you could easily groove to, and evokes an almost nostalgic vibe of 90s chill out music.

With ESESE set to release more material in the near future, the Spring and Summer warmth ahead is looking a little easier knowing we'll have more tracks like 'Far' to keep us cool.
