You wanna listen to ‘Common People’ from Low Dive
‘Common People’ marks the first single and music video for LOW DIVE. Hailing from the alternative hub of Brisbane’s West End, they’ve been involved in other bands such as Foxsmith, spun tunes at the evercool The End and even had this very music video clip get the major thumbs up over twitter by BIG SCARY.
‘Common People’ is a dreamy tune, focusing on repeating percussion, swathed in melodic synth and topped off with slow hazy vocals. It’s a tune without ego; it rolls onwards, swept up in the developing melody and unassuming lyrics like, ‘We make small talk each day/I still don’t now what to say.’
The central theme, ‘We’re all common people,’ is lovingly mused upon, throughout and shows up in the video clip. It’s a heavily edited slow sweep through West End, in a knowing local way – it’s beautiful because of that. It’s not a heavily orchestrated view of a suburb but the natural beauty is exposed by familiarity. Muted colours and glow of afternoon lights bring together the hazy swell that the song promotes. The clip also prominently features a slew of face-on shots of Low Dive’s friends in The End, a cozy bar dedicated to vinyl DJing, craft beer and great live acts. Low Dive seem to be a labour of love, their music is self-effacing yet obviously skilfully put together. It’s not an undirected pottering forward but a guided sway. They are definitely one to keep an eye on as they develop and put out further releases to soundtrack your afternoons.
Low Dive will be releasing their first single at The Foundry in Brisbane on the 29th of June supported by Pool Shop and Mckisko and also playing June 9th at Wooly Mammoth with Spirit Bunny, Blyolk, and L.Flora.
