Live Review: Jordan Rakei's track 'Sorceress' is smouldering and soulful

New Zealand-born and Brisbane-raised Jordan Rakei has dropped his latest track Sorceress, and it is bursting with soul and wondrous depth.

Born in New Zealand and raised in Brisbane, JORDAN RAKEI’s voice is adored worldwide. Recently signing to the label Ninja Tune, this has been one big year for him. The musician has dropped his latest track ‘Sorceress’, the first single off of his forthcoming album.

‘Sorceress’ is smouldering, and the vocals are the backbone of the piece. His voice is layered, even choral, and entirely soulful. The percussion smashes with symbols, but a subdued fuzz is added to it to produce more cool than calamity. This track is bursting with intensity and wondrous depth.

Jordan Rakei throws himself into every element of the song writing process. He writes, sings and plays almost every instrument that you hear on his tracks.

The Groundhog Day of songs, 'Sorceress' makes repetition sound so damn good. The chorus consists of the same few words, looped over and over. "You are the sorceress," he repeats with gust, but it is the intensity of the percussion and impassioned delivery of the vocals that make every line dig deeper.

Jordan Rakei has made a fan out of musicians and music lovers worldwide. In the past, he has worked with Australian favourites Remi and Ngaiire, and even lent his vocals to Disclosure for their 2015 track ‘Masterpiece’. After self-releasing his debut album, Cloak, only last year to worldwide acclaim, 'Sorceress' is an exciting snapshot of what is to come.
