Live Review: Mina takes us to the tropics with 'Boing'

17 May 2017 | 6:59 am | Holly O'Neill

London based producer MINA and lover of all things dancehall releases 'Boing' with a video that celebrates rather than appropriates.

London based producer MINA has been in the production game for three years, fine tuning her sound and gathering her influences to create a body of work that is incredibly diverse. A lover of afrobeats, dancehall, UK funky and anything syncopated, Mina has released a number of singles, EPs and remixes all with that signature danceable rhythm. A track from her latest EP, Sentah, released on Enchufada, 'Boing' is Mina's first video and is also a pretty good representation of her entire audio and visual ~vibe~.

This solid dancehall track takes you away to the tropics, with standard afrobeat bassline mixed over contrasting percussion. A bit of change of pace for Mina, the production on this is all percussive, featuring none of her signature marimba usage. The track isn't any lesser for it however, as contrasting rhythms play against each other as shakers shake and air horns echo away. MC Nané featuring on the track is a perfect fit, with her effortless Spanish bars sounding chill even as they're chopped up over the beat.

Produced and directed by the woman herself, the video sees iPhone footage of Mina's shows, lush natural scenes and dancers doing their thing over undulating 3D backgrounds. The DIY vibe of the footage along with the schmick 3D have a common thread in the colour palette, showcasing the vibrancy of the nightlife and natural beauty of the many cultures Mina experienced in her travels.

“The video was shot in some of the amazing places I have been lucky enough to visit recently, including Mexico, Jamaica and Ghana," She says of the video, also noting that video and the rest of her EP are both celebrations of the people she met through her experiences. Featuring of course, the British vocalist Nané, Australian graphic designer Teachesofpeaches on 3D duty and a number of international dancer pals, this is a global collaborative experience Mina has curated.

Rather than appropriating this kind of world music and the culture around it, Mina embraces it's diversity and celebrates the people who make it great. Go check out the rest of her EP, Sentah, for more marimba heavy booty rocking beats with brilliant features.
