Live Review: Hatchie's tries and succeeds with debut single

9 May 2017 | 7:11 am | Emma Jones

Brisbane artist HATCHIE (aka Harriette Pilbeam) arrived in style yesterday with the release of her debut single, 'Try'. Having cut her teeth in bands such as BABAGANOUJ and GO VIOLETS, she's now stepping out on her own in twinkling, hazy glory.

Over warm guitars and gentle keys, the intro quickly captures your attention before the track kicks into gear. Shoegaze-y vocals and danceable pop sensibilities make this track a total earworm, catchy from the first expertly crafted hook. Not trying to be anything it's not, Hatchie is just making damn nice pop music, with elements of her indie background coming into play to ground it a little.

Evoking influences of the likes of COCTEAU TWINS, this song just shines. Optimistic lyrics, jangly versus and a hook that you'll be singing along to in no time, 'Try' has been a long time coming and definitely worth the wait. Pilbeam plays to her strengths here, and instead of 'Try'ing to be anything else, is just making fun music to dance to in the morning sunlight, afternoon, night, whenever! Total bliss.
