‘Patience’s paid off- Deer’s back with a shimmering pop gem

To put it simply, if you like Cashmere Cat – you’ll like DEER’S ‘Patience’. Following Cashmere Cat’s lead in using bass as less of a weapon, as many are tempted to do, Deer uses it as a guide. It’s the lead through the delicate soundscape that blends together sharp percussion, pitched up warped vocals and an array of sugar sweet sounds. It’d be a discredit though, to cast Deer as just one of Cashmere Cat’s disciples; he’s exploring further, adding his own twists and takes on a genre that seeks to go hard by going gentle.

Deer, or Tom Hitchcock has been bubbling away for some time now in the global electronic scene. He’s previously collaborated with UV BOI and Martin King of Martin & Oscar. He’s remixed Maribelle’s Penthouse Penthouse collab ‘About You’ and MssngNo’s single ‘Xe2’ which then featured in all of RL Grime’s 2015 live sets. He’s shared the stages with Alison Wonderland, Shlohmo and Ryan Hemsworth. Deer’s been brewing with the greats and now it’s time for his swipe at pop.

‘Patience’ exists in the blurry genre of deep house/tropical house but mainly – that one Cashmere Cat does. That niche he’s lived in comfortably without any competition. It’d be impossible to describe the track without some mention or even comparison. Yet, it’s the different twists that Deer takes that make it standout. Namely, Deer sings on his own track – letting it exist raw and edited within only a few seconds of one another, followed by heavily edited pitched up vocals. It’s the layering of drums over one another, it’s building towards euphoric moments that are underpinned by rapping hi hats. ‘Patience’ has a lot of energy, it’s still sugary sweet like a journey through candyland but like running through it with friends. It’s got a pop momentum that makes it immediately addictive and a perfect single to release after a year of no releases. This is, apparently the first in a number of pop singles Deer intends to release this year and well, it’s looking like it may be year of the Deer.
