Live Review: Lia Lia captures the melancholy of summer's end on debut track 'Olymp'

18 April 2017 | 11:26 am | Lloyd Crackett

Lia Lia's debut track 'Olymp' is a melancholic groove, capturing the universal seasonal sadness that ensues after a beautiful summer.

You might not yet be familiar with Lia Lia just yet, but we could hazard a safe guess that is all about to change. Coming out of the gate with a fierce debut release, we're all ears and eyes for the international rising star.

There is a sort of slyness to Lia Lia’s debut video, an understated set of synths and drums play host to a surely unmistakable melancholy. But, it’d be easy to be swayed from the realisation, Lia Lia’s voice is syrupy and flows in and out of the groove, only broken up by spoken word emissions that expose the gloomy feelings truly driving the song. ‘Olymp’ is a music video that is about looking back in full and seeing all the good and the bad of a beautiful summer.

Lia Lia’s music video makes use of her new stomping ground, Berlin. With a posse of wonderfully dressed girls, bottles of gin and a night of fun – Lia Lia underpins her debut with misdirection. The video provides a carefree vibe, a gaggle of pretty friends having fun spliced with her honest spoken lyrics that are truly revealing. It's the distraction of the joy in the clip that gives the lyrics the emotive punch, 'With time, winter came, for restless hearts, there is just pain, I stood on this hill, trying to keep still’. The lyrics are simple but honest. Lia Lia has said of the song 'Everything was grey, I was heartbroken, and depressed.' It’s obvious that the song has captured a summer passed, that while bright and shiny – much like the song, had its end, its repercussions and a seasonal sadness. It’s an interesting debut from the Berlin-based artist, her core desire to jump in on her first single to a dark period of her life, only begs how honest and raw her music can get in the future.

Lia Lia has spent the past few years travelling, having visited Shanghai, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, and Cologne. She’s unsure if Berlin will be a final destination. Here is to hoping she still manages to put her roots down and put out more material as her debut ‘Olymp’ is a melancholic groove, ready to wallow in.
