Live Review: Hoodlem's 'Funny Farm' is anything but a joke

28 April 2017 | 8:22 am | Jackson Langford

From the very opening seconds, you can tell HOODLEM and her new track 'Funny Farm' aren't here to fuck around.

The strutting bass line oozes sex appeal and manage to contrast beautifully with Hoodlem's ethereal vocals. Mixing those elements has become a bit of a raison d'être for the Toronto-based producer, who has been mastering her craft for some time now. Over the course of her discography, Hoodlem has ensured that everything she produces sounds fresh and experimental but still remaining entirely captivating, and 'Funny Farm' is no exception.

The whole track is a relentless onslaught of midnight lust with an element of danger. It's almost as if Hoodlem is singing the entire thing with some sort of wry smile despite the entire song exploring her vulnerability and honesty. It's that mix of innocence in the lyrics with the unabashed fierceness in the production that is so irresistible, similar to that of BANKS or TOVE LOHoodlem's voice, while serene, not once quivers as if she's finally wearing her vulnerability proudly on her sleeve.

Her soulful vocals and punching melodies have served Hoodlem well so far, and with the release of this absolute monster there's no doubt that her star will continue to shine brighter and brighter.
