Live Review: Get a 'Self-Confidence' boost from GNIGHTZ

10 April 2017 | 10:02 am | Lloyd Crackett

Gnightz is out and about to spread the fact she is a self-made artist, she’s the manager, the producer and the writer of her own verses.

‘Self-Confidence’ is a straight up track. The first lines deliver the absolute GNIGHTZ truth: ‘My self-confidence is through the roof, I may as well be bulletproof’. Gnightz is out and about to spread the fact she is a self-made artist; she’s the manager, the producer and the writer of her own verses.

Gnightz is Grace Nightingale, a Brisbane-based artist who has been putting out tracks for a few years now. Her style is a mish-mash of influences. A definite rap edge is obvious, she’s playing up the ego side of rap, being her entire own team including hype woman. But there is almost a less over-produced PC music edge to her production and vocal style.

Gnightz voice is naturally sweet and her raps, while boastful and inward-looking, never broaden to the point of arrogance. The sweetness isn’t diminishing, it’s a young singer-songwriter who wants to rap over her own production. The collision into sounding vaguely PC music is purely because that itself is a genre that co-opts female vocals and traditionally feminine-sounding production. While Gnightz' production may not be as slick as current PC music, that’s exactly a point in her favour – she’s running the whole show and it is about her and what she can do, not what a few thousand dollars worth of equipment and a studio can pump out.

‘Self-confidence’ itself, features some neat lyrics 'living my life like a CEO’ and ‘yeah, I like pastry, yeah I like dough’ – the entire track is a goldmine for amusing lyrics. Gnightz’ lyrics all have a tongue-in-cheek feeling to them, it’s how she manages to write an entire song about her own self-confidence without it being overtly arrogant in an unpleasant way. It’s this strong sense of self, with her natural sweetness, that makes the entire track. The production is catchy, the crow sound that pops up is jarring but serves the excellent purpose of keeping you listening intently and it all blends together to make a great track.

Gnightz currently doesn’t have any upcoming shows but her latest was with Jessica Says and 100%, and she has also previously shared the stage with legends, Friendships and Habits. She's definitely ready to bring that 'self-confidence' to anyone daring to listen.

Keep updated with Gnightz for more tracks and hopefully a video for ‘Self-confidence’.
